I Don’t Have a Driveway but I Do Have a Lamppost

Have You Thought About ‘Making the Move to Electric’ but Are Concerned About Not Having a Driveway at Home?

You're not alone.

According to 'RACFoundation', around 33% of UK homes do not have access to off-street parking, a potential issue that stands in the way of some people considering an electric car.

That doesn't mean an EV isn't an option for a third of the UK surely?! Thankfully not.

A London-based company named 'Ubitricity' have found an incredibly innovative solution to help provide homeowners without off-street parking with a charging solution using current infrastructure which has been sitting right outside our homes for years. 'Ubitricity' stands for ubiquitous electricity – "because the energy needed for the transformation to climate-friendly e-mobility is already available everywhere around us."

Since 2008 the company has been a pioneer in retrofitting EV charge points in existing lampposts. Their lamppost charge points enable residents to charge where they need to most, near home. They have 5,500 charge points installed across the UK already and aim for that number to be 50,000 by 2025.

So How Does It Work?

Ubitricity works closely with local councils to implement smart charging by way of two methods;

1. Retrofitted lamppost charge points: The most popular charge point is fully integrated into the lamppost column and utilises infrastructure and cabling already installed.

2. Satellite bollard charge points: This smart solution allows greater placement flexibility when current lampposts are not located close enough to the kerbside. The bollard is always connected to a lamppost and so requires no major groundwork.

Could This Work for You?

The best way to see if this is an option for your area is to first ask your local council if they have any initiatives already underway. We're seeing more and more local authorities backing greener solutions for almost every aspect of everyday life.

We also suggest speaking to Ubitricity themselves to see if they are able to help with your enquiry. They have a great contact form that will get the wheels in motion (pardon the pun) to check if this is an option to help you get behind the wheel of an EV.
